The Chateau Laurier: A Controversy, a Case Study, an Opportunity for Constructive Dialogue
The Chateau Laurier is an iconic and beloved heritage place that matters to people across the country. From 2016 – 2021, a high-profile controversy played out over a proposed rear addition to this National Historic Site, making waves in the national media, in City Council chambers, in Parliament, and even in the courts. Heritage Ottawa has diligently chronicled some of the many facets of this discussion on their website.
What better place to explore the systems and safety nets needed to manage change to heritage places, and the recalibration of our practices and priorities as a movement? Conference delegates will experience the Chateau firsthand before any potential construction, and for the National Trust, it is a fitting venue for our 50th conference: the Chateau Laurier ballroom was the site of our first conference banquet on Friday, September 27th, 1974, shortly after our creation as the Heritage Canada Foundation the year before.
Conference Venue Information
The main conference events will be held at the Fairmont Château Laurier. This includes the opening reception, keynote, plenary, & concurrent sessions.
